During 2024, our business continued to grow and strengthen across a broad range of secondary funds spanning private equity, private credit and private wealth, allowing us to continue refining our ESG processes.
Coller Capital is recognised as a pioneer and innovator in private market secondaries, and we approach the integration of ESG into our business, especially within our investment process, with the same pioneering spirit.
We prioritise authentic, rigorous, and repeatable ESG integration throughout our investment process, backed by a proven track record. We are committed to being a responsible business, fulfilling our commitments at the firm level, and advocating for wider market influence and thoughtful leadership. Adopting a company-wide holistic approach is critically important to the success of our programme.
We are continually improving, and this was an area of focus for us again in 2024, particularly for our monitoring, measurement, and management processes. Technology-enabled ESG solutions have proven to be particularly useful, notably for our firm-level sustainability compliance and fund-level analysis.
Our focus on technology-enabled ESG led to our inclusion in the top 20 most influential in ESG for the second year running and a high rating from the UN-PRI (reporting on a voluntary basis in 2024).
The growing influence of technology in society will require careful consideration of its application in governance and ethics. For now, its adoption for ESG purposes in private markets, particularly machine learning and AI, remains at a more nascent stage across our portfolio GPs (based on our 2024 annual GP ESG survey). However, these technologies have significant potential to positively impact ESG and sustainability, but this will likely be in partnership with human specialists (to augment human intelligence and analysis) in our view. How this plays out over time is something we will monitor with interest across our portfolio GPs and other stakeholders.
Finally, from a personal perspective, I was honoured to be named in the 2024 Real Deals ESG Hall of Fame, particularly as this was based on the views of my peers from across the industry.
00:06:02 – 00:17:00
This is our ninth ESG report, building upon the findings from our ninth GP ESG survey highlighting...
00:18:23 – 00:35:19
Notably our awards and recognitions. Making the top 20 most influential in ESG (Private Equity News), being inducted into the ESG Hall of Fame (Real Deals) and winning the PE WIN Awards: Private Equity Firm – International.
00:36:17 – 00:53:16
And we continue to make progress. In this report we look at how we integrate ESG into our investment process, pre and post-investment. And we take a deep dive into our credit strategy and look at the tricky issue of measuring our finance carbon emissions in private credit secondaries.
00:53:16 – 01:06:06
We also look at how the firm addressed sustainability at the business within its own right, and sought to enhance our culture. And on the GP ESG survey, we are proud to note that this has been running for nearly a decade.
01:06:06 – 01:34:06
In 2024, we found 91% of portfolio GPs holding an ESG policy, versus 87% back in 2016. But note the commitment to ESG remained high over that period. Over 75% of portfolio GPs are PRI (Principles for Responsible Investment) Signatories, versus a figure of 40% back in 2016.
01:35:01 – 02:11:20
But I think those are not unexpected findings. What’s more interesting to note is the progress on the maturity of ESG, both more generally and thematically. 63% of portfolio GPs viewed their ESG programs as being of a higher level of maturity, something that aligns with our own thinking when assessing our portfolios. 60% of portfolio GPs believe some form of net carbon zero commitment is possible by 2050.
