CIP IX: ESG in action
Coller International Partners IX (CIP IX), closed in December 2025 with $17bn raised, and represents Coller Capital’s most advanced integration of ESG considerations into a global, diversified secondaries strategy. Classified as an Article 8 fund1 under the current version of the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR), CIP IX promotes environmental and social characteristics while maintaining a disciplined investment approach suited to the realities of private market secondaries.
A Decade of ESG integration, elevated for Article 8
Coller has embedded ESG within its investment process for over a decade, not as a marketing exercise but as a core part of the CIO-led investment function. CIP IX builds on this foundation by enhancing controls, disclosure, and engagement to align with Article 8 expectations.
Key enhancements include:
- Formal sector avoidance commitments targeting activities with unacceptable environmental or social impacts.
- Structured GP engagement to advance ESG policies, practices, and governance.
- Enhanced, risk-based ESG data collection across the largest portfolio company exposures.
- Climate analytics, including PCAF-aligned financed-emissions estimates and TCFD-aligned scenario analysis.
Robust due diligence, screening and post-investment monitoring
Every potential investment undergoes a structured ESG review, including application of various third-party screening tools for controversies and ESG track record, GP policy analysis, sector and geographic mapping, and incident checks.
For GP-led transactions where influence is highest, Coller conducts deep dives, targeted questioning, and iterative diligence. Investment Committee materials include a formal ESG commentary, and investments may be declined on ESG grounds. Post-investment, incident watchlists and red-flag analytics support ongoing monitoring and timely engagement.
Active stewardship through GP engagement
CIP IX advances ESG outcomes by engaging directly with underlying GPs, where influence is most meaningful in a secondaries strategy.
Core stewardship activities might include:
- Targeted thematic engagement (face to face meetings or calls, sharing of materials and insights, portfolio facing engagement in collaboration with GPs).
- Workshop-based partnerships to enhance ESG capabilities.
- Technology-enabled data collection and OSINT-driven deep dives.
- Our annual ESG GP survey covering major GPs in CIP IX (as well as other funds.) This engagement-led approach aligns ESG improvements with the realities of indirect investing while promoting better practices and transparency across portfolios.
Climate transparency and portfolio net-zero alignment
CIP IX’s climate profile reflects a predominantly low transition-risk portfolio, with physical risks concentrated in moderate ranges due to diversified geographic exposure. While Coller does not set fund-level net-zero targets it cannot directly influence, CIP IX seeks to accelerate the transition by engaging GPs and through monitoring adoption and uptake.
Evidence-based ESG outcomes across CIP IX:
- The majority of exposures screen at Low ESG risk via RepRisk (see breakdown)
- Climate risk scenario analysis shows lower risk relative to public benchmarks.
- SDG mapping indicates strong positive alignment with SDGs 3, 8, 9, and 16.
- Third-party analysis shows a +46% net impact score, outperforming many public and private benchmarks according to the same measure.
Summary
CIP IX demonstrates how a large, globally diversified secondaries fund can authentically promote environmental and social characteristics at scale through:
- Disciplined ESG integration embedded in investment decisions.
- Engagement-led stewardship focused on GP influence.
- Technology-enhanced monitoring and transparency.
- Climate-aware investment selection using PCAF, TCFD, and scenario modelling.
- Clear, credible reporting aligned with current regulatory expectations.
By aligning rigorous ESG practice with the realities of secondaries investing, CIP IX shows that responsible investing can be both authentic and operationally grounded, reflecting Coller Capital’s belief that ‘better never stops‘.
