British Telecom
In March 2003, Coller Capital forged an innovative partnership
with British Telecom (BT). The deal brought together
BT’s corporate incubator Brightstar and New Venture
Partners –
a US venture firm which Coller Capital had previously helped
to spin out of Lucent – to form a new, independent
group: NVP Brightstar.
BT characterised the deal as creating “the leading
global corporate venture development organisation, which
will enable us to realise even more value from current and
future intellectual property”.
The NVP Brightstar partnership commenced life by acquiring
five companies from BT Exact, British Telecom’s technology
research business, and has purchased further assets since
that time. BT retains a 23% stake in the partnership.
